Free experimental audio apps for Mac, my music links, and my Colour/Music interactive installation
I'm a sound artist and computer musician. Years ago I settled on a purpose statement: "creating things that bring delight." I still think that covers everything. My work sits in the relationship between maker, instrument and player - whether that's a listener inside a soundscape, a child interacting with a sensor mat, or someone using one of my apps to explore different ways of composing with sound.
Freeform Audio/Midi Apps for Mac
These are audio tools for exploring sound in unconventional ways.Canvas Audio is a trackless, zoomable workspace where you can drag audio clips onto a 2D canvas and arrange them freely. You can stretch time, layer textures, and discover structures you wouldn’t find in a conventional DAW. It is intended to be a quick, intuitive way to work without the complexities of a full audio workstation. You can export the audio events as a mix, or as time labelled files for easy import to your favourite DAW for more detailed mixing.Eternal Return is a circular sequencer built around concentric rings running at diffferent speed ratios. It can create unusual patterns that take many minutes to repeat, using short drum like sounds or longer audio fragments. you can also add midi events. Each event can be a note/trigger, or up to four control change envelopes.Both apps are designed for open-ended discovery rather than quickly finishing a track. My Music
Slow, spacious worlds of sound built to slow down time and still the listener's thoughts. Evolving textures that shift and reveal themselves over minutes rather than seconds. I work with granular synthesis, sustained drones, and real-time processing to create immersive pieces that invite you to inhabit them rather than simply listen.
The Colour/Music Interactive Installation.
I have created an immersive sound and light experience called The Sound of Delight, with which I run workshop experiences both in special needs schools and at public events, on behalf of Eye Music Trust.Participants interact with sensor-driven instruments - floor mats, touch keyboards, laser sensors - that play musical sounds and control LED lights in real time.It's intense, non-verbal, play-based, and built on surprise: the idea is that people explore and learn without realising they're doing it.These events transform spaces with fabric sails and colour into worlds of music and light.
